Join us for our next Koinonia Prayer Night on Friday, June 27 @ 7PM. To ensure enough food is prepared, please be sure to RSVP.

Koinonia in Greek means "fellowship." In the Bible, however, fellowship means much more than what modern Christians have made it. It involves intimacy in relationship and a deep spiritual camaraderie that involves prayer, mutual encouragement & edification, and the breaking of bread. This prayer night is designed to reflect the spirit of that word and to meet people where they are, similar to what we see in the Book of Acts.

Scripture

Matthew 22:23-33

Marriage at the Resurrection
23 That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 24 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him. 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. 27 Finally, the woman died. 28 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?”

29 Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 31 But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”

33 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.

Corporate Prayer

Gracious God,

We thank You for the truth and beauty of Your Kingdom — a Kingdom where no one is forgotten, no one is less-than, and no one is alone.

We confess that the church has too often mirrored the assumptions of the world rather than the vision of Your Word. We have exalted marriage at the expense of singleness, confused intimacy with romance, and reduced people down to categories You never intended. Forgive us, Lord, for failing to see one another the way You do.

Help us to recover the radical vision of the early church — a family where the single, the married, the widowed, and the orphan are embraced with equal dignity, value, and purpose. Teach us to honor singleness not as a problem to be solved, but as a calling to be lived — fully, joyfully, richly — in You.

Jesus, You were single, yet never alone. Paul, too, walked in the fullness of devotion and love without a spouse. Help us to follow their example — to know that our wholeness is found in You, not in marital status.

Holy Spirit, empower our church to be a place where the realities of heaven are lived now — where brothers and sisters love one another with pure hearts, where friendships flourish, where every person is seen, known, and honored. Break down the walls of suspicion and pity that we so often place around singleness, and build up a community where all can thrive.

And for those who feel unseen or unmoored, draw near to them today. Wrap them in the warmth of Your love. Remind them that they are not waiting to be whole — they are already made whole in Christ.

We love You, Lord. May Your Kingdom come, and may Your will be done — in our churches, in our friendships, in our lives — as it is in heaven.

In Jesus’ name we pray,

Amen.
